Dzeko making Inter statement amid pending contract talks

Edin Dzeko reveals the secret to still scoring decisive goals at 36 after allowing Inter to beat Napoli. ‘I’ll keep going as long as I can still make a difference.’

The Nerazzurri knew this was their last chance to stay in the title race, already sitting 11 points adrift of the leaders at the end of 2022.

Dzeko popped up with the decisive header on a Federico Dimarco cross, after first half big misses from Dimarco, Matteo Darmian and Romelu Lukaku.

It proved enough to end Napoli’s unbeaten Serie A record and blow the Scudetto battle wide open, as they are now five points above Milan, seven from Juventus and eight apart from fourth-placed Inter.

“I was tired and had cramp, the pitch wasn’t in great condition, but I’m happy with the win,” Dzeko told DAZN after limping off the field to make way for Joaquin Correa.

“We were playing for the three points, especially against a team that for the first six months played extraordinary football. We knew Napoli passed it around well, which we saw today too, but told ourselves we had to remain solid and focused.

“We had three or four really big chances and in the end I think we deserved the victory.”

Edin Dzeko is quickly becoming Inter’s most reliable striker and with only six months left on his current contract, it’s unclear if he’ll stay with the Nerazzurri for next season.

The Bosnian forward joined the Milanese club in August 2021 from Roma in a deal worth around €2.8m, adding an experienced veteran to Simone Inzaghi’s squad. In his debut season, Dzeko netted 17 goals and provided 10 assists across 49 appearances, being an important member of the team.

Dzeko was again the difference maker in Inter’s key 1-0 win over Napoli on Wednesday, scoring a header just before the hour mark to guide the team to victory. Although Romelu Lukaku was brought back amid much fanfare in the summer, the Bosnian veteran is still proving himself to be the most reliable striker in the squad.

Calciomercato.com details how Dzeko turned down a recent contract offer from Inter, when they offered him a one-year deal with lower wages than what he currently earns. Although he refused the offer, the former Manchester City man does want to stay with the club and made his position clear.

Dzeko informed the Nerazzurri management that he’d be willing to sign a new one-year contract with the same figures as his current deal, and that he’d like to postpone talks until the end of the season.

The ball is now in Inter’s court and they must decide if they want to continue placing their trust in the Bosnian veteran or not.
