Discussions over a contract renewal for Nigerian winger, Samuel Chukwueze, have stalled as he is yet to reach a final agreement with Villarreal, according to a report on Spanish website, AS.

The 23-year-old’s contract at the Estadi de la Ceràmica is due to expire in the summer of 2024 and both parties have not agreed on new terms for renewal.

According to the newspaper, the proposal Yellow Submarine presented to the Nigerian was not convincing enough and this caused him not to accept the new offer putting his future at the club in doubt.

“Villarreal and the footballer’s representative have been sitting for a long time to try to extend the winger’s contract, but these negotiations are not advancing as expected,” the report stated.

“And time is running against the interests of the club, given that, as has been mentioned, he is close to entering the last year of his contract which ends in June 2024.”

The Nigeria international has been an integral part of coach Quique Setien’s side scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists across all competitions this season.

Chukwueze had an outstanding showing against the Real Marid at the Bernabeu, where he scored a brace plus an assist as Villarreal stunned the champions with a 3-2 win on matchday 28.

Los Blancos are now reportedly keen to add Chukwueze to their ranks this summer as Madrid president, Florentino Pérez, has been impressed with the Super Eagles star’s form and wants him at the Bernabéu next season.

Serie A side AC Milan and several Premier League clubs have the Nigerian on their radar and, if he does not renew, Villarreal could sell him to a club that meet his €80m release clause.

Chukwueze joined Villarreal in 2018 and has scored 41 goals and provided 33 assists in 217 appearances.
