TRS promotions has emphasised the need to create a legacy for traditional games and sports to promote youth development and social cohesion as the General Manager of TRS, Tunde Amosu stated that the first edition of the Lagos State International Draught competition will commence from November 1 to December 16, 2023 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
He said the draught competition is a brainchild of TRS promotions in partnership with the Lagos State Sports Commission and Rattawu Lagos State Council as a media partner.
Amosun said that the winner of the tournament will receive three million naira, the 1st runner up receives two million naira and the 2nd runner up goes home with one million naira, while consolation prizes would go to other participants.
“The ideas of this initiative is to bring to limelight the beauty of this traditional game of draught and at the same time, showcasing the sporting and tourism potentials of Lagos State.
However, one notable aspect of this event is that it will provide remuneration and rewards for participants at the championship and equally give them compensation for their love for the game, which has been left unnoticed for decades.
“We at TRS promotions are patriotically committed to the development of traditional sports in Lagos state with the overall intent of creating a springboard for our teeming youth population to expose their talents and develop sporting facilities in the state. Furthermore we are equally considering the possibility of introducing the traditional game of ‘Ayo’ in our next edition of championship,” he said.
Director General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Oluwatoyin Gafar restated the government’s commitment to support sport activities in the state, noting that the youth’s engagement would discourage vices.
“Lagos State has over 20 million population, and 62 per cent are youths. If we are doing anything without taking them into consideration, we will be wasting our time. That is why we support anything and everything that has youth intonations.”
