Nigerian defender William Troost-Ekong has sustained an injury and remains a doubt for Nigeria’s next month’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea Bissau, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to play the Djurtus in a two-legged game as they bid to book their place in Ivory Coast.
While the first leg will hold at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on March 24, the Eagles will travel to Morocco for the second leg on March 28.
The 29-year-old picked up the injury in Salernitana’s 1-0 defeat to Hellas Verona in midweek and was replaced by Norbert Gyomber seven minutes from time after it was confirmed he could not continue with the game.
While no exact date was given for the return of the Eagles vice-captain, Salernitana wrote that the former Watford player had an MRI scan to determine the severity of his injury.
“The US Salernitana 1919 communicates that William Troost-Ekong underwent an MRI and CAT scan at the Centro Polidiagnostico Check-Up which showed a fracture of the tibial plateau following a blunt trauma, ” the club said on its official website.
“The athlete has already started the physiotherapy protocol and will carry out new diagnostic checks in two weeks.”
The centre-back joined the Garnets from English Championship club, Watford in the January transfer window and has made three league appearances for the club.
Salernitana are currently 16th on the Serie A table with 21 points from 23 matches sitting four points above the relegation zone.
