Nigeria’s top-ranked squash player in the men’s category, Onaopemipo Adegoke, and his compatriot Babatunde Ajagbe have qualified for the round of 16 at the ongoing Goodfellow Classic 2024 in Toronto, Canada, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Both players came from a set down to reach the last 16 of the tournament.

Adegoke bounced back from an opening defeat to beat Canada’s Abbas Nawaz 3-1 (6-11, 11-5, 13-11, 12-10) in 49 minutes in his first game, while Ajagbe outclassed another Canadian Jayden Shortt 3-1 (7-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7) in less than 30 minutes.

Adegoke will face Alejandro Reyes from Mexico in the round of 16 on Thursday (today) just as Ajagbe competes against Elliott Morris from Wales in the last 16.

Speaking with PUNCH Sports Extra after his round of 16 win, Adegoke says he remains focused on winning the title.
“It’s my dream to win the Goodfellow Classic to boost my rankings because it will boost my ranking,” he said.

“I remain focused because there are lots of tough opponents here like Ajagbe and Abdelrahman Abdelkhalek from Egypt.”

The four-day tourney, which served off on Tuesday, will end on Saturday with the winner receiving the sum of $9,000.
