Nigeria’s matchday six opponent in their final Group A game of the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifier, Sao Tome and Principe will hold their first training session ahead of Sunday’s game on Friday (today) at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Sao Tome and Principe national team have arrived in Uyo in batches for the dead rubber AFCON qualifier on Thursday. The True Parrots touched down at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, around 11am on Thursday.

Nigeria, on 12 points and two ahead of second-placed Guinea Bissau, have already qualified for the finals, with only the group leadership to sort out after this weekend’s final-day games. Guinea Bissau’s Djurtus host third-placed and already-eliminated Sierra Leone in Bissau, and a win will take them to 13 points while Sao Tome and Principe have no chance of qualifying for the tournament.

The True Parrots are looking for their first victory in Group A after four defeats and a draw. The first leg against Nigeria which was played in Morocco last year ended 10-0 in favour of Nigeria.

Adriano Eusébio’s men will however hope to avoid a repeat of that embarrassing scoreline when they file out against the Eagles on Sunday. The coach had called up an all overseas-based squad for the game but they will remain rooted to the bottom of the table, regardless of the outcome of the match and the other game between Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau.
