Remo Stars are looking to make the most of their restored three-points and three goals to boost their super-six chances, as they welcome second-placed Akwa United to Ikene in a high-profile match-day 16 game of the abridged 2022/23 Nigeria professional Football League on Sunday (today), PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Following an alleged attack on match officials during their match-day 12 game against Gombe United, Remo Stars were docked three points and three goals by the Interim Management Committee of the NPFL, but that decision was reversed by the disciplinary committee of the Nigeria Football Federation after revisiting the incident reports and evidence.
The reversal has come handy for the Sky Blue Stars, who were facing an uphill task of making the top-three in the tough Group A as they were sixth on the table with 21 points but have now moved up a place with 24 points.
Although their work is still cut out, coach Daniel Ogunmodede is confident that they are closer to achieving their target.
“We are back in the race with just two points behind the team in second. And the fact that we have two more home games is an added advantage, so, we are so much excited, and we want to capitalise on that to get good results from our last three games, beginning from this one against Akwa United,” Ogunmodede told PUNCH Sports Extra.
“Before the reversal, I didn’t want to talk about it because I had no control over it. Fortunately for us we have it back. Before then, our plan was to win all the games in the run-in to the end of the regular season, as we know that was our only hope of making the super six,” he added.
Remo Stars are on a six-game unbeaten run in the second stanza, and beyond extending that to seven, a win against Akwa United will take them to 27 points and a place above their opponents into the top-three, while they hope results will slow down Enyimba and Plateau in the super-six race.
Enyimba, who are currently third with 25 points are in Maiduguri to face bottom rocked El-Kanemi Warriors, while Plateau United who are also on 24 points and fourth in the Group will face another relegation threatened side, Kwara United in Akure on Sunday (today).
