Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has quashed speculations that Wilfred Ndidi is injured and may miss Friday’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations game against Guinea-Bissau.
The Leicester City midfielder was not part of the Eagles’ first training session on Monday evening at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja as only 13 players of the 14 in camp were put through their paces under Peseiro on Monday.
Turkey-based Bright Osayi-Samuel and captain Ahmed must joined up with the squad after training to bring the number of players in camp on Monday to 16.
Ndidi is one of the four midfielders selected by Peseiro for the game against the Djurtus, with Brentford’s Frank Onyeka, the largely inactive Joe Aribo (Southampton) and Everton’s Alex Iwobi the others.
Speaking with journalists after the team’s training on Monday in Abuja, the Portuguese coach stated that Ndidi was left out to work with the medics as a precautionary measure.
“It’s nothing serious,” Peseiro replied when asked why Ndidi didn’t train with the team.
“It was best for him to rest and recover well. He will join the training tomorrow (Tuesday). We are in contact with the team’s medics and we have a good relationship with them.”
The 26-year-old will hope to make his second appearance under Peseiro since he was appointed in May 2022. He featured for 45 minutes in the Eagles 4-0 loss to Portugal last November.
