Journalist Osasu Obayiuwana has hit hard at the Nigeria Football Federation for their inability to keep records of the number of matches amassed by national team players, The PUNCH reports.
Obayiuwana shared a voice note on his twitter page where he revealed how the NFF relied on data given by the players.
“There are just basic things that you will expect from the NFF and one of them is to know the number of games that every player for Nigeria would have. That’s something that should be in the record of the NFF,” Osasu said.
“Can you imagine that an official of the NFF actually made contact with Asisat Oshoala and asked her if she knew the number of games she had played for Nigeria?
“The NFF doesn’t know and she was so shocked about that and couldn’t comprehend how the NFF doesn’t know when she should be the one asking them because they are the ones responsible for keeping the records.”
The player in question Oshoala has no data available on Wikipedia on the number of games she has played for the country, while her goals for the Super Falcons is recorded as 29.
The Super Falcons are currently preparing for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where Oshoala and her teammates will add to their international appearances.
It is not the first time the NFF has been embroiled in data and statistics mix up for players of the national teams.
Last year, former Falcons midfielder Maureen Madu, who has 101 caps on FIFA website, was shocked when the NFF countered FIFA’s figure, saying she had only 52 appearances for the country.
In 2021, the NFF also admitted to an error in its calculation of Ahmed Musa’s appearances for the Super Eagles. While NFF earlier said Musa had made 100 appearances for the Eagles, FIFA said he had 98 caps for the national team after featuring for Nigeria against Cape Verde in a 2022 World Cup qualifier.
