Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Spanish-born Nigerian striker, Samuel Omorodion, from Granada, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
In a statement released on the club’s website on Monday, the Madrid-based club stated that Omorodion had signed a five-year contract that will run till 2028.
The 19-year-old made his first appearance in La Liga against Los Rojiblancos and produced a performance enough to convince Diego Simeone requesting the club to pay the striker’s release clause.
Omorodion harassed Mario Hermoso, baiting him into a first-half yellow card, and later scored the visitors’ equaliser, before the hosts romped to a 3-1 win.
The 2020/21 LaLiga champions on Monday announced they had paid the striker’s €6m release clause — just four months after he renewed with Granada until 2028.
The move by Atletico reportedly irked the Andalusian club, who planned to keep the player in the first team this year, which reportedly would have seen his release clause rise to €40m in 2024.
Although Granada would go on to lose their first game in the league 3-1 to Atletico, the Super Eagles-eligible made history at the Wanda Metropolitano after he became the third-youngest goalscorer in LaLiga for the Nazaries.
While his career is still in the early stages, Omorodion is already showing signs that he could be one of the best strikers in Spain in years to come.
The youngster scored 24 goals for Granada’s Juvenile team in his first season at the club, before scoring 18 goals and recording five assists in 33 games in the Segunda Federacion last season.
