A former sports commissioner of Ogun State Bukola Olopade, who leads the 2024 National Sports Festival Local Organising Committee, is optimistic sports in Nigeria will continue to soar with new sports minister Senator John Enoh in charge.
Enoh was sworn in on August 21, the same date when the previous minister, Sunday Dare, started his job in 2019.
Olopade believes Enoh will build on Dare’s legacy.
Speaking from Budapest, Hungary at the ongoing World Athletics Championship, Olopade remarked that the preparations for the 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun State will get a new lease of life, dismissing suggestions that the new minister could be limited by his lack of a sporting background.
“What matters is the managerial ability that he possesses”, Olopade said, adding that most successful sports managers were never experts in the sports that they controlled.
“Havelange was never a footballer. He was just a swimmer and water polo player at the 1936 Olympics. Yet, he ruled the world football governing body and had the second longest tenure after that of Jules Rimet.
