The Director, Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, Zack Amodu, desires to have the event become the first gold-label 10km road race in Nigeria after being the first World Athletics-label road race in the country.

Amodu hinted at the plan in a release on Tuesday after the organisers of the yearly event renewed sponsorship partnerships with Nigerian Breweries and Development Bank.

He said the two companies were collaborating with the organisers to have the race course measured by a World Athletics-accredited course measurer as the organisers celebrate 10 years of world-class road running events in Nigeria.

“We are indeed delighted to have the two companies on board yet again as we strive to become the first road race in Africa to be granted platinum status,” Amodu said.

He added, “We are delighted that the two companies have renewed their commitment to see that we deliver another world-class event worthy of our gold label status.”

In 2015, the Okpekpe 10km Road Race became the first road race in West Africa to be granted World Athletics label status, which means it is regarded as one of the world’s leading road races.

It is also the first road race in Nigeria to have its race course measured by a World Athletics/AIMS-certified course measurer.

The 2024 edition of the race is scheduled for May 25 in Okpekpe, Edo State.
