Nigeria international David Okereke is delighted Super Eagles teammate Cyriel Dessers has joined him at newly promoted Italian Serie A side, Cremonese, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Cremonese on Wednesday announced the signing of the Nigeria forward from Belgium’s Genk for an undisclosed fee. Okereke played against Dessers while starring for Belgian giants Club Brugge.

The Serie A newcomers were among a number of clubs interested in the 27-year-old, who was top scorer in the inaugural Europa Conference League last season with 10 goals for runners-up Feyenoord.

Okereke, who recently joined Cremonese after an impressive campaign on loan at Venezia last season, where he scored seven Serie A goals, said he wasn’t surprised that Cremonese had splashed the cash on his fellow countryman.

The former Nigeria youth international, however, backed Dessers to make an instant impact and help the Serie A newbies.

“I faced Dessers when he was playing for Genk and I got to see him in the Conference League last year,” Okereke told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I am very happy that he comes to us; his experience could help us a lot.”

Cremonese kicked off the 2022/23 season on an excellent note with a 3-2 victory over Ternana in the Coppa Italia.

They will hope to build on their success as they face Fiorentina at the Artemio Franchi Stadium on Sunday in their first topflight game of the league.

Both Okereke and Dessers are available for selection in their bid to help Cremonese remain in the Serie A for another season.
