Ofili claims silver to win Nigeria’s 30th medal

Sprinter Favour Ofili has won the silver medal in the final of the Women’s 200 meters race at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 19-year-old clocked 22.51secs to finish behind Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah (22.02secs) and above third-placed Christine Mboma of Namibia who ran 22.80secs at the Alexander Stadium on Saturday night.

The race was the last event of day nine at the Commonwealth Games and saw Nigeria claim its 30th medal to finish sixth on the medal table.

Mary Onyali was the first Nigerian athlete to have competed in that division in 1994.

Thompson-Herah’s time saw her set a Games Record at the tournament beating the 22.09secs set by Shaunae Miller-Uibo.

In the women’s freestyle 76 kg category final, Rueben Amuchechi Hannah was beaten by Justina di Stasio of Canada.

The Canadian out-grappled Amuchechi 4-2 to deny the Nigerian the gold.

Isau Ogunkunle also defeated Raj Alagar of India to the bronze in the third place match in the men’s singles classes of 3-5.

Ogunkunle comfortably beat Alagar in a three-game set of 11-3,11-6,11-9.

At the end of Day 9, Nigeria has now secured 9 gold, 8 silver, and 13 bronze medals.
