The athletics events kick off on Tuesday (today) at the ongoing 7th National Youth Games at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

Today’s action includes the heats of the 100m, 400m, and 1500m races, promising an exhilarating display.

In anticipation of this exciting competition, Blessing Harrison, the athletic coach from Rivers State, has set his sight on ensuring his athletes gain a podium finish at the end of the competition.

“At the last National Youth Games, Rivers State secured the fifth position, while Delta State clinched the top spot, and Lagos State followed in second place. So, our mission is clear, we are gunning for one of the top three positions,” he said.

Harrison believes that this edition of the NYG has the potential to produce fresh national champions who will proudly wear the colours of Nigeria on the international stage, saying, “It was this very competition that introduced talents like Tobi Amusan and Favour Ofili, among others, to the world of athletics.

“We’re on the lookout for more rising stars who will shine at this competition and later represent our great nation. It’s like passing the torch to the next generation as the older stars make way for the new.”
