Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has signed a deal to join Portuguese outfit GD Chaves on a three-year deal from Spanish side Ponferradina.
Nwakali joined Spanish second division side SD Ponferradina for free in 2022 following a contract dispute with Huesca, and made 36 appearances for the Segunda division side in the 2022-23 season, scoring one goal and contributing four assists. The midfielder could not help his side beat the drop to the third division despite his efforts.
Ponferradina allowed Nwakali to leave on a free transfer following their relegation last term.
The Nigeria international makes his return to Portugal after playing for FC Porto’s B-team at the start of his career.
The midfielder joins a GD Chaves side that finished seventh in the 2022-23 season of the Portuguese league. He will join for a nominal fee and be announced as a new player for the side in due course.
Various Spanish clubs expressed interest in the 25-year-old but he opted for a move to Portugal.
