The Nigeria Union of Journalists Special Delegates Conference sitting in Kano on Thursday passed a new law to supervise the activities of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria.
NUJ national president, Chris Isiguzo, while amending the NUJ constitution, included a new clause stating that any SWAN election not supervised by NUJ henceforth was null and void.
There is also a provision for a new inserted clause, stating that the national presdent of SWAN should now be addressed as national chairman.
Also, the session objected to the proposed draft law that SWAN should now occupy the status of beat association.
According to sources, the resolution passed by the NUJ special session is an infringement on the verdict of courts of competent jurisdiction earlier passed on the issue.
It was also learnt that NUJ had formally written to the Corporate Affairs Commission recommending that the marriage between it and SWAN be dissolved.
However, the action by NUJ paved the way for SWAN to be registered as a professional body.
“I ponder how NUJ, which earlier parted ways with SWAN by giving them a letter to register with CAC, suddenly turned back and now laying claims to SWAN being an affiliate of NUJ, when SWAN is now a professional body and NUJ is a trade union. They have no business together going by the present position in the provisions of the law,” an observer stated.
