Nigerian winner to get N2m at Abeokuta 10km Race

The Nigerian winner of the 2023 Lotus Bank Abeokuta 10km Race, which holds in the Ogun State capital September 9, will go home with a cash prize of  N2m, the event organisers have stated.

Also, local athletes who end up in second, third and fourth positions will earn N1m, N500,000 and N300,000 respectively, while the fifth place winner gets N200, 000.

Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Company, organisers of the event, Bukola Olopade, stated on Wednesday at a media briefing in Abeokuta, that the event is also part of the week-long activities celebrating the 80th birthday of the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo.

He disclosed that the race, which would start at Iyana Oloke, Onikolobo would end at the entrance of the palace of the Alake.

“There will be fanfare at the finish point of the race on September 9 after the race, with top Nigerian artistes performing to the delight of the runners and guests at the race,” Olopade stated.

According to the organisers, 42 foreign long distance runners have indicated interest in competing at the event.

They will compete for the $12,500 prize money on offer for foreign athletes, Olopade stated.

“The champion of the race goes home with a cash prize of $5,000, second-place winner gets $3,000, third-place winner $2,000, fourth-place winner $1,500 and fifth-place $1,000, making a total of $12,500.”

The Group Head, South West Marketing of Lotus Bank, Oluwafolajinmi Brodie-Mends, stated that it was important to use the Abeokuta 10km Road Race to help the youths in the state develop themselves and further expand the tentacles of the bank.

The Alake, Oba Gbadebo, who received Olopade and his team in his palace, commended Nilayo Sports and Lotus Bank for maintaining high standards in the state.
