Nigeria wins fourth gold in Zambia

Team Nigeria, on Sunday, added two gold medals to take their medal tally to six at the ongoing 4th African U-18 Championships and the 15th African U20 championships in Ndola, Zambia.

The team now has four gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

In the athletics event, Opeyemi Oke won a gold medal in the women’s U-20 400m final after returning a time of 52.60secs on day two of the event.

Also, Samuel Ogazi won a gold medal in the U-18 men’s final with a time of 46.08secs.

Prior to the two-medal haul on Sunday, jumpers Fejiro Djoma and Grace Oshiokpu won gold medals in their opening event.

In the U-18 women’s triple jump event Djoma leaped to 12.69m to win Nigeria’s first gold, setting a new Championship Record (CR) and smashing Veronica Ugeh’s record of 12.56m in 2013.

Oshiokpu added the second gold medal for Team Nigeria in the U-20 women’s triple jump when she leaped 13.03m to win the final.

Also, Justine Jimoh jumped a height of 2.05m to win silver in the U18 Boys high jump final, where he set a new Championship Record (CR), beating Aobakwe Nkobela’s previous record of 2.04m.

Goodluck Fiaku won the bronze medal with a jump of 2.00m to cap Team Nigeria’s day one outing of the championship on a bright note.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria named 42 youngsters comprising 23 athletes in the U-18 girls and boys and 19 athletes in U-20 men and women to compete for honours at the championships.
