The Flamingos will aim to secure qualification to the quarter-final of the ongoing 2022 U-17 Women’s World Cup in India when they face Chile on Monday (today) in one of the final Group B matches of the competition, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Bankole Olowookere’s side needs only a draw to finish as group runner-up following their 4-0 win over New Zealand in their second group game.
They had lost earlier lost 2-1 to Germany in their opening game of the tournament.
But either side could advance to the quarter-final stage with a win at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
Chile, on the other hand, kicked off their India 2022 campaign with a 3-1 thrashing of New Zealand.
The South Americans, however, had no answer to a 6-0 slaughtering by Germany in their second match.
That scandalous Chile defeat allowed Nigeria to leapfrog the Red One into third place in Group B ahead of this encounter.
Nigeria and Chile met for the first and only time at this level at the 2010 World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago.
The Africans defeated the South Americans 5-0 at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima. A hat-trick from Loveth Ayila coupled with strikes from Francisca Ordega, and Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene secured an emphatic win for Nigeria.
Chile has not been to the cadet World Cup since that edition, while Nigeria has missed only one since the tournament’s inception.
