Adana Demirspor’s Technical Director, Vincenzo Montella, has condemned the attack on Henry Onyekuru after the Nigerian was whistled by his own fans on Saturday after their victory over Kasimpasa, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The winger was in action for 24 minutes as Adana Demirspor humiliated Kasimpasa 5-0 in a Super Lig clash, where Nigerian winger Babajide David notched two of the goals.

A jubilant home crowd, however, turned hostile immediately after the encounter when they saw Onyekuru stroll to attend to media duties pitch-side.

The whistling stemmed from the player’s associating with players of Galatasaray in the wake of his club’s defeat earlier in the month.

Earlier this month, the 25-year-old, who is currently on loan from Olympiacos at Adana Demirspor, was caught on camera fraternizing with his former teammates at Galatasaray.

Adana Demirspor’s president, Murat Sancak, had condemned the player’s actions and on Saturday, some fans were heard whistling at the winger.

Speaking to the media after the match, Montella acknowledged Onyekuru’s emotional nature but emphasized that the player had acted in good faith.

“I don’t want it to happen again,” an upset Montella said of the fans whistling at Onyekuru. “He is an emotional athlete. And he acted in good faith.”

The winger had three different loan spells with Galatasaray, the first being in the 2018/19 season where he helped them to a league title and subsequently for the second half of the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons.
