Bayelsa United striker and current second highest goal scorer in the Nigeria Premier Football League, Robert Mizo, says he is fired up to break the 10-year NPFL goal record and not preoccupied by the neck-and-neck Golden Boot race of the season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The current 23-goal record was set by former Enyimba forward, Mfon Udoh, in 2014 and the player has recently expressed his desire to see the record broken.

Remo Stars striker Sikiru Alimi currently leads the race with 11 goals in 15 appearances, one goal more than Mizo, who has 10 in 12 appearances.

Mizo missed a chance to also take his tally to 11 goals on match-day 16 when his second half penalty was saved by Enyimba goalkeeper, Olorunleke Ojo, in Bayelsa United’s 2-1 defeat at home against the champions.

“For me, it’s zero competition. Like I always say, I just want to be better than last season and also help my team Bayelsa United get out of the relegation zone. If I keep scoring, and we keep defending well, we will survive,” Mizo told PUNCH Sports Extra.

“Mathematically, the record is achievable, and even for any other goal scorer in the league at the moment. That is another motivation to do better because when you break the existing one, you set a new one. The first half of the season is not over yet, let us see how I’m able to push that and we will see properly by the second half of the season,” he added.

Last season, the 23-year-old finished the abridged NPFL season with nine goals and his 10 goals in the 2023/24 season took his tally to 19 goals in 2023, which ranked him as the ninth highest scoring Nigerian, home and abroad in the year.

Mizo will hope to be in action again when Bayelsa make the trip to Ibadan to face embattled 3SC on match-day 17 January 7.
