Director of Sports at Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries Godwin Enakhena has refuted claims that the once adored MFM FC of Lagos had been disbanded following their relegation to the Nigeria National League, The PUNCH reports.
MFM were relegated from the Nigeria Professional Football League last season as a result of a poor run, which saw them finish bottom of the table with just 36 points in 38 games.
Six months since their fate was confirmed, the club had taken part in the induction for NNL clubs ahead of the new season and while they might have been preparing for life in the second tier, it was however reported last week that the club’s slot had been taken over by Henserd FC of Sagbama, Bayelsa State, signaling the end of MFM FC in Nigerian league football, an arrangement Enakhena said was a return of favour and not disbandment.
“The club is not disbanded but handed over to the person that gave it (NNL slot) to us in the first place. But we’ve continued with community football and our annual Dr. D. K. Olukoya International Youth Football Competition that sees players from our branches from across Africa as participants,” Enakhena told The PUNCH.
“In addition to the women’s basketball club and wrestling, we are bringing back a national table tennis event and athletics for U-18s. Dr Olukoya wants to spread the support for Nigerian youths through sports and in other spheres like scholarships, vocational training etc which his divinely ordained 70 points Youth Repositioning Agenda is all about. Sports is one out of his 70 means of helping the youths of Nigeria and even beyond.”
It was learnt that MFM got their NNL slot from the same club for free in 2014 and the club has also returned the favour.
After gaining promotion to the NPFL in 2015, MFM brought spark to the league, particularly for Lagos fans, who enjoyed few night matches in the NPFL and also watched the team play CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup preliminary games at the Agege Township Stadium.
