Nigerian striker, Josh Maja, says his goal is not to emerge as top scorer in the league but help his side gain promotion back to the topflight at the end of the season.
Maja scored his 11th goal of the season but it was not enough to earn Bordeaux the maximum points as they were pegged back in the 92nd minute by visiting Amiens in a 1-1 draw, a result that could harm their promotion ambitions.
Maja put Bordeaux in front in the 42nd minute from the penalty spot but the visitors scored an equaliser in the 92nd minute through George Ilenikhena as both sides shared the spoils.
The draw means Bordeaux are nine points behind log leaders Le Havre and just two points ahead of Metz as the promotion race heats up.
Despite being top of the scorer’s chart, Maja says he’s not concerned about the individual award but his goal is to help the team book qualification back to the topflight where they belong.
“Being top scorer, no, that’s not my goal. I have a goal. It’s to go back to Ligue 1. If that happens, if I have to be top scorer in the championship, it will be a good thing. But the most important thing is the team and winning matches,” the one capped Nigerian striker told girondins4ever.
“I feel good. I am in a good period. It’s not my best feeling because we drew in the last game. I scored, but we need to be better in terms of results. I need confidence all the time, but whether I score or not, my confidence is always there. Right now, I’m in a good position on the pitch to score. It’s my period at the Girondins, I play all the matches. It’s a good thing for my head and on a physical level, so we have to continue like this.”
