Alex Iwobi has received plaudits from his coach Frank Lampard following his man-of-the-match performance for the Toffees in Tuesday’s 1-0 Carabao Cup victory at Fleetwood Town, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Iwobi starred for 90 minutes and made an assist (his ninth for the club) as Everton were made to work hard for their win against a dogged Fleetwood outfit but Demarai Gray’s 28th-minute strike ensured the Blues’ progress to the third round of the competition.

The Nigeria international had coolly picked out a slide-rule pass to Gray, who made no mistake with a curling finish into the far corner of the net.

The game was his fourth of the campaign with the Nigerian delivering yet another high-calibre performance in central midfield.

Speaking after the game, Lampard who was delighted to see his side record their first victory of the season said, “Alex is playing at a really high level where he plays – midfield, higher up the pitch.

“He works off the ball and he’s a huge player for this squad. We’re delighted with his performances and since I’ve been here he’s been getting better and better. He’s started the season in great form.”

Everton’s attention now reverts back to the Premier League, with a visit to Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday where they hope to record their first win of the campaign.
