Former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is focused on a win against new opponent Robert Helenius at London’s O2 Arena this Saturday, with the Finnish boxer stepping in as a replacement for Dillian Whyte.
The planned rematch between Joshua and Whyte had to be called off after Whyte failed a voluntary drug test.
Helenius, a former two-time European title holder with 32 wins and four losses to his name, has agreed to step into the ring on short notice. Despite the sudden change, Joshua remains focused on securing a win.
“This wasn’t in the script,” Joshua acknowledged, referring to the change in opponents.
“I am laser focused on the win,” he said.
Helenius’ last big fight was a first-round knockout defeat by Deontay Wilder in October.
“I am a true Viking that is willing to face any challenge at a moment’s notice. This is not an opportunity I was going to let slip away. I plan to make the most of it,” the 39-year-old said.
Helenius has never competed for a world title, but his recent third-round TKO of Mika Mielonen showcased his skills. With a record that includes losses to notable boxers like Deontay Wilder, Gerald Washington, Whyte and Johann Duhaupas, he is no stranger to tough competition.
A win for Joshua could potentially set the stage for a highly anticipated fight with former WBC champion Wilder, possibly happening early next year.
Joshua’s track record at the O2 Arena is impressive, having never been defeated on this stage. His recent victory against Jermaine Franklin in April solidified his reputation on home turf.
Promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that while Joshua explored several potential replacements from the undercard, including American heavyweight Gerald Washington, many contenders priced themselves out of the opportunity.
According to Hearn, Joshua reacted “calmly” to the news of the cancellation of the fight after the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association informed promoters Matchroom and boxing authorities of Whyte’s test result.
“Joshua sent me a message which was unbelievably calm. AJ is desperate to fight. He has looked unbelievable in camp. I have never seen him in such good shape,” he said.
The initial rematch announcement between Joshua and Whyte was made in July. The cancellation due to Whyte’s failed test led to this unforeseen match-up.
With a straightforward substitution and Joshua’s determination to succeed, the O2 Arena prepares for another night of boxing action, underscoring the unpredictable nature of the sport.
