Iwobi leads resurgent Toffees against Magpies

Everton midfielder, Alex Iwobi, believes a home win against Newcastle United at Goodison Park on Thursday (today) can spark a revival in their bid to avoid relegation this season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Everton’s only victory against the Magpies in the past six Premier League meetings came at Goodison Park last season when he scored a 99th-minute winner.

The encounter comes with huge implications for both teams who are at the end of the Premier League table. Newcastle took a big step towards Champions League qualification for next season after their 6-1 mauling of Tottenham last Sunday, while Everton slipped further into trouble following their goalless draw with Crystal Palace.

However, Howe’s men will be looking to strengthen their grip on a place in the top four with another positive result against the Toffees but Iwobi is banking on last season’s magic to re-ignite their campaign as well as the return of some injured players back into the team to record a win.

“It’s another game at home with the fans behind us. That should lift and motivate us,” Iwobi said on Everton website.

“Newcastle are coming off the back of a good win, but we’ve got the motivation and a couple of players coming back. Doucs and Dom are back.

“Hopefully, Amadou will be back as well. With everyone returning, there is strength in depth in the squad, so we should do well.

“The result we had last time at home against them should give us added motivation too.”

The Nigeria international has made eight goal contributions (one goal, seven assists) in 32 league appearances this season.
