Nigeria National League side, Inter Lagos FC, joined the celebration of this year’s International Women’s Day celebration during their 3-0 home win over Solution FC at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos on Saturday.
Sesay Abdul bagged a brace and Obia Tony added the other goal for Inter Lagos as they maintained their lead in Conference B with 20 points after 12 games.
As the players emerged from the dugout for the encounter, their solidarity with women worldwide was displayed on their jerseys which featured the faces of inspirational African women including the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, late Chizoba Wigwe, Dora Akunyili, Folorunso Alakija, women’s 100m hurdles world record holder Tobi Amusan, six-time African Women’s Player of The Year Asisat Oshoala, novelist Chimamanda Adichie, Tiwa Savage, Funke Akindele among others.
Inter Lagos substituted the traditional name and sponsor tags on their jerseys with portraits of the remarkable African women from various spheres of life.
Co-founder and CEO of Inter Lagos FC, Lanre Vigo, expressed the club’s pride in championing women’s empowerment and inclusion.
“At Inter Lagos, we believe in using our platform to inspire positive change and challenge societal norms. By honouring these inspirational African women on our jerseys, we aim to amplify their voices and inspire the next generation of leaders, both in sports and beyond.”
In their first season in the NNL, Inter Lagos are in contention for promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League as they currently lead their group.
