Bendel Insurance on Sunday at the Awka City Stadium defeated Sunshine Stars 1-0 to book a place in the semi-finals of the 2023 Federation Cup.
Striker Imade Osarenkhoe scored the only goal of the match from the spot in the 56th minute after Sunshine defender Ogbuagbu Emmanuel handled the ball in the box to put the Benin Arsenal in front.
It turned out the match winner as Insurance, who are unbeaten in league and cup games this season, continued their magical run.
The NPFL newcomers had missed several scoring chances as Sunshine goalkeeper, Mustapha Lawal, denied Imade and Echeta with good saves in the first half to keep score goalless at half time.
Insurance will now meet Warri Wolves in the semi-finals match, which is likely to hold after the NPFL Super Six tournament in Lagos between June 1 and 11.
Second-tier Wolves beat Lobi Stars 2-1 at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu-Ode to set up the tricky clash against Insurance, who are playing in the semis after nearly two decades of missing out.
Coach Monday Odigie’s side are now gunning for the double this season, having qualified for the NPFL Super Six playoffs and the Federation Cup semis.
Enugu Rangers also reached the last four after overcoming newcomers Doma United to win 1-0 at the Akure Township Stadium. The Flying Antelopes clash with Plateau United, who defeated Kwara United 1-0 in Abuja, in the semis.
In the women’s event, Bayelsa Queens tackle Rivers Angels in the final.
