Ini-Obong rewarded after Naija Super 8 wonder goal

Bendel Insurance midfielder, Ini-Obong Okon, will get a cash reward of N100,000 plus an invitation to the Naija Super 8 draws on Thursday, thanks to his well-taken goal in their 3-2 loss to Rivers United in the last game of the zonal eliminations at the Eket Stadium on Sunday.

Ini-Obong, a graduate of Insurance Feeders team, who came into the game as a second half substitute, threw the spectators at the Eket stadium into frenzy with his spectacular strike that restored parity for the Benin Arsenal in the 70th minute, leaving the scoreline 2-2 until 92 minutes.

He first lobbed the ball over his marker, Albert Korvah, with a perfect control just outside the box, before unleashing a half volley, which went straight into the top corner, leaving experienced goalkeeper Victor Sochima motionless in the Rivers United goal.

The goal became a trend on social media and organisers of the Naija Super 8 and their technical committee did not allow the world-class effort go uncelebrated, and adjudged it the best goal of the playoffs.

He was also announced as the Naija Super 8 playoffs ambassador, an honour that will see him being part of the draw for the main competition on Thursday.

“Congratulations to Ini-Obong Okon, the Bendel Insurance of Benin City star, who scored the beautiful goal that has been adjudged best at the just-concluded Naija Super 8 playoffs in Eket.

“As reward, he gets N100,000, a ball and a medal. In addition, he has an all-expense paid trip for the Naija Super 8 draw holding on Thursday in Lagos. He will join Victor Ikpeba to conduct the draw,” Naija Super 8 organisers.
