Winless in their opening two games of the season, Plateau United’s task in the 2022/23 abridged Nigeria Professional Football League is not getting any easier as pressure mounts on Fidelis Ilechukwu and his team to get their season on track as quickly as possible.
After a thrilling but uncompromising 3-3 draw against 3SC at home on match-day one, Plateau United were close to getting a consolation point on the road in mid-week, but they were undone by a late header against Bendel Insurance in Benin, leaving Ilechukwu scratching for some silver lining after picking just one point from the available six.
As they continue the search for their first win of the season, they return home to the new Jos Stadium against Enyimba of Aba, a side that took all points on the same ground against Nasarawa United on match-day one.
Ilechukwu is however not worried by Enyimba’s recent visit to the ground, insisting that his side are poised for a different challenge.
“We have prepared and the most important thing is that we are a scoring side. We are working to make sure that we score more and concede less. At least to stay in a comfortable position, we have to win and I believe we are in top shape,” Ilechukwu told PUNCH Sports Extra.
“Our fans have been patient and we want to make sure that they smile after the game,” He added.
After Enyimba’s victory in Jos against Nasarawa United, the elephants were tamed on their own ground in Aba by Akwa United on Wednesday and their coach Finidi George also feels his side has a lot to do to create momentum.
“We conceded one goal in our last two games and our centre backs did a lot in the last. Aside from that, I think we have to work harder and get our mental state right,” Finidi said after the game against Akwa.
While Enyimba are 3rd in the Group A table with four points, Plateau United are 7th with one point.
