After an annihilating 61-16 victory over Liberia on day one of the IHF Trophy Women Africa Zone 3 championship in Ghana, Nigeria’s U-18 girls team on Thursday earned another comfortable win over hosts Ghana in a thrilling match at the Tennis Arena of the Accra Sports Stadium.

Coach Shittu Adewunmi’s side continued in their superlative form as they easily earned a 49-29 win over Ghana, despite the hosts enjoying the support of their fans at the Tennis Arena.

Goalkeeper Kehinde Babatunde and her co-goalkeepers made some vital saves to stop two-time Ghana MVP Balchisu Salifu from scoring, but it was Nigeria’s Esther Matthew that got the MVP of the match for scoring vital nine metres goals from the wings.

Nigeria have now won two matches in the U-18 category and will hope to maintain their winning streak when they play Ivory Coast next on Friday (today).

Speaking after the game, an elated Adewunmi said he is hoping to get another victory against Ivory Coast.

“We are glad that we were able to win today’s (Thursday) game because it was a good match and the girls played to instructions,” he said.

“The opponents’ fans were up and doing but because we had the tactical advantage we were able to defeat them and we are glad that we did well. We will be hoping to take on Ivory Coast on Friday and we will take a look at the team again and improve on our defence so that we can come out victorious.”
