South African forward Percy Tau is looking forward to a tough battle against Nigeria in Uyo on Friday as the Bafana Bafana arrived in Nigeria on Wednesday ahead of their crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier clash against the Super Eagles at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
The South Africans arrived in Lagos on Wednesday afternoon and thereafter connected another 45-minute flight to Uyo.
Tau tops coach Hugo Broos’ 23-man squad, which was drawn from an initial 36-man preliminary squad and the forward is fancying his chances of hurting the Eagles again after scoring both goals in Bafana’s 2-0 victory over Nigeria at the same venue in 2017.
“I’m looking forward to it, and I want to qualify for the World Cup with South Africa,” Tau told African Football.
“Against Nigeria and Zimbabwe, it won’t be easy, but we’ll try to get a result away from home because they’ll always be difficult and we lost to them at the AFCON 2023 tournament, so we have to try something this time.”
Tau’s brace in 2017 ended South Africa’s 25-year wait for their first competitive victory over the Super Eagles.
After facing Nigeria on Friday the South Africans will return home to welcome Zimbabwe in their fourth game of the series on Tuesday.
