Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has expressed sadness over the death on Friday of the Assistant Kits Manager of Sunshine Stars of Akure, Taiwo Dosunmu, from complications from bullet wounds following an attack on the team by armed robbers earlier this month.
Players and officials of Sunshine were on their way to an NPFL match against Bendel Insurance in Benin City December 7 when their bus was attacked, with Dosunmu hit by a bullet.
A statement by the club said Dosunmu died at the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital after a series of surgeries by consultants at the facility.
“His passing is a huge loss not only to his immediate family, but the management and players of Sunshine Stars FC, the good people of Ondo State and the Nigerian football family in general,” Shaibu stated in his condolence message.
Also, President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, said on Saturday, “This is a very sad development, but God is all-knowing and we can never question His wisdom.
“Our prayer is that Almighty God will grant the late Dosunmu eternal rest, and also grant his immediate family, relations and the Board and Management of Sunshine Stars FC, as well as the good people of Ondo State and the Nigerian football fraternity the fortitude to bear the loss.”
Chairman, Nigeria Premier Football League, Gbenga Elegbeleye, described the death of the young club officer as “unfortunate and tragic.”
“It is a loss to the entire league because his role at Sunshine Stars is an important contribution to the NPFL ecosystem,” Elegbeleye told NPFL Media.
In similar vein, NPFL side Kwara United also condoled with the management of Sunshine.
In a message to Sunshine signed by the Chairman of Kwara United, Kumbi Titiloye, the club stated, “With heavy hearts, we mourn the untimely death of your club’s Assistant Kit Manager, Taiwo Dosunmu, who died on the line of duty as a result of the injuries he sustained from the bullets of armed bandits along Benin-Ore expressway on Thursday, December 7, 2023.”
