Former clubs, teammates mourn late NPFL player, Udechukwu

Nasarawa United Football Club and Sunshine Stars FC of Akure are mourning the passing of their former striker, Chinedu Udechukwu, who died in Jos on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old striker was reported to have slumped and died in Jos after complaining of severe headache.

Udechukwu’s demise was first mentioned by former teammates on Wednesday night and in the early hours of Thursday, who shared moments they had with him on social media.

Amanat Baghdad FC of Iraq player, Tolulope Oluwole, who played with Udechukwu at both clubs wrote on his WhatsApp status, “RIP bro. Your death really shocked me. I saw you in Jos this year, now you are dead. It’s painful. May God keep protecting us.”

Another former teammate of the late player at Sunshine Stars, Fu’ad Ekelojuoti also expressed grief at the sudden demise.

“I’m in shock, the last time we were in touch was at Sunshine Stars, I pray God grant him eternal rest.”

In their statement, Nasarawa United, the last club Udechukwu played for in he NPFL sent condolences to the family if the player.

“We are devasted to learn about the sudden demise of one of our former players, Chinedu Udechukwu.

“While we pray for the repose of his soul in heaven, we send our deepest condolences to his immediate family, his loved ones, team and playmates, the Nigeria Football Federation as well as the football fraternity in the Country,” the statement read in part.

Sunshine Stars FC of Akure also wrote, “The bullish striker joined Sunshine Stars mid 2019/20 and played with the Club through the better part of 2020/21 season before joining Nasarawa United subsequently.

“Our thoughts are with the late player’s family and associates at this time. We pray God grant them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
