Cricket: Rwanda edge Nigeria ahead final showdown

Reigning champions Rwanda finished the round-robin stage of the 2023 Nigeria Cricket Federation Women’s T20i tournament with a 39 runs win over Nigeria on Saturday, even as both teams are set for another showdownin the final on Sunday (today).

Rwanda won the game’s toss and chose to bat first and they raced to 100 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs in the first inning.

Giselle Ishimwe and Sarah Uwera were in control to ensure that Rwanda were comfortable on 41 runs for no loss in six overs of power play, before the latter was ousted by Nigeria on the first ball of the ninth over.

Adekunle Shola showed character for Nigeria in bowling with the leg break spin as she took three wickets, conceding 10 runs in four overs.

Rwanda still proved too strong for the Female Yellow Greens in the second inning, limiting Nigeria to just 61 runs all out in 16.4 overs.

Salome Sunday was the only iota of light in the Nigeria batting line up with 29 runs off 37 balls.

Earlier in the day, Sierra Leone finished the round-robin stage with a five-wicket win over Cameroon to settle their battle on the table with both teams having won a game each before their meeting.

Cameroon recorded 81 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs during the first inning, while the Ladies Patriots reached 82 runs for the loss of five wickets in 15 overs to win the game.
