Remo Stars goalkeeper Kayode Bankole says they expect a tough clash when the Super Eagles B team face Ghana in their African Nations Championship qualifier on Sunday in Cape Coast, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Next year’s edition of the CHAN tournament holds in Algeria.
The Eagles B side take on the Galaxies in the first leg in Cape Coast, before the second leg at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on September 3.
Bankole was a late addition to the team, following injury to Rivers United goalkeeper, Victor Sochima.
Salisu Yusuf’s side have intensified their preparations ahead of the encounter and have played four friendly games against youth teams as part of their build-up for the matches in Cape Coast and in Abuja.
Speaking with PUNCH Sports Extra, Bankole echoed the words of the head coach, who unequivocally stated that the mission of the team was not to avenge the defeat of Nigeria by Ghana on the road to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, but to qualify for Algeria 2023.
“The expectation against Ghana is to win and qualify for the African Nations Championship in Algeria,” he said.
“We are expecting a tough clash when we face them because we know the history between the two countries, but we are confident of a victory. For us, it is not about the past games but we want to do our best and ensure we get the job done and qualify.”
On his invitation to the national team, he said, “Honestly, I am so happy and it shows hard work pays.
“I will continue to work and improve on some areas that need to be improved upon.”
The Eagles B are expected to depart the country on Saturday (today) for Cape Coast ahead of their Sunday clash.
