Victor Boniface is in the running for the Jupiler Pro League Player of the Season Award, following his exceptional performances for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise this season.
Boniface has registered nine goals and eight assists for USG in 36 appearances in the Belgian topflight this campaign and the performance of the 22-year-old is one of the reasons Union SG are in a position to win the Jupiler Pro League for the first time in 88 years.
Boniface faces competition from his teammate and captain Teddy Teuma and Ebony Shoe winner Mike Trésor, who has registered 23 assists this season, a record in the Belgian topflight.
Other nominees include Toby Alderweireld (Antwerp), Hugo Cuypers (KAA Ghent), Jean Butez (Antwerp), Vincent Janssen (Antwerp), Bryan Heynen (Genk), Joseph Paintsil (Genk) and Maxim De Cuyper (Westerlo).
However, Gent wonderkid, Gift Orban is a surprise omission despite painting the Belgium league with goals since his arrival in January, scoring 15 goals in 15 games.
Orban was excluded because he didn’t meet the requirement for “minimum minutes” played” by a player, having made his debut for Gent in February.
The winner is decided by votes of all Jupiler Pro League players and Belgian players playing abroad at the highest level.
The last and only Nigerian to have won the award is Paul Onuachu, who bagged the award in the 2020/21 season.
