Ahead of their Tuesday’s (today) UEFA Champions League clash against Liverpool, Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder has included Nigeria international Calvin Bassey in the squad to face the 2019 champions at Anfield in London.
The Dutch champions travel to England to take on the Premier League side in their second match of the group stage.
There have been concerns over the availability of the defender after he was substituted late into Ajax’s 5-0 demolition of SC Heerenveen at the weekend.
The former Rangers defender was taken off the field with just six minutes to the end of the game after he felt discomfort in his knees forcing his side to see out the remainder of the game with 10 men having exhausted all their substations.
Though, in an interview with ESPN which was quoted by Ajax Showtime, Schreuder assured that Bassey does not seem to have been left with a serious injury and could be available for the trip to Anfield.
“We were able to switch well. Maybe we switch the last player a little too early, but I thought we could do that.
“Fortunately, Calvin Bassey is not so bad. It was a kick in the calf, so that’s not too bad.”
“He (Bassey, ed.) said it’s no problem.’’
On Monday, in a tweet by the club with the picture of the Nigerian, the 22-year-old was selected among the twenty-four players for the trip to England.
The versatile defender made his Champions League debut in style as he helped the Dutch champions to a huge win against his former side at Johan Cruyff Arena.
He will however hope to continue his impressive form against the Reds if selected.
