Super Eagles duo of Taiwo Awoniyi and Joe Aribo suffered defeat with their Premier League clubs in the opening fixture of the 2022/23 campaign.

Awoniyi came in the 63 minutes as a substitute for Sam Surridge, but could not do enough to rescue Forest from losing to St James’ Park.

A Fabian Schar wondergoal and Callum Wilson’s deft finish shattered newly promoted Nottingham Forest as Newcastle opened their Premier League campaign with a deserved victory.

Joe Aribo’s Southampton side were battered by Antonio Conte’s  Tottenham Hotspur men in a five-goal thriller.

Aribo, who joined Southampton in the summer transfer window, played 90 minutes.

James Ward-Prowse’s volley in the 12 minutes gave Southampton the lead but Ryan Sessegnon’s header gave Tottenham the equaliser in the 21 minutes.
