Akwa United vs Remo Stars: We’ve shaken off our glitch – Ayeni

Head coach of Akwa United Deji Ayeni says his team has put the mid-week defeat and attempted robbery attack on their team behind as they welcome Remo Stars to Uyo in the star game of match-day six today.

Following their 2-1 loss to Kwara United in Ibadan on Wednesday, the team escaped a a robbery attack on their way home on Thursday along Ogoni road, a dreaded mishap that caused panic and left the vehicles of the team damaged.

“Just few minutes after a check point along the Ogoni road, there was a roadblock, immediately we noticed there was no police there we knew it was armed robbers. Before we knew it they started coming out from the bush with some kind of weapons,” Defender Bolu Sholumade narrated the incident to PUNCH Sports Extra.

“The bus behind us wasn’t close to us that’s how the got the chance to revers. But damaged the the three vehicles we used. That was how we escaped.

“We eventually passed the other side of road, like facing one way to get home,” he said.

Ahead of their crucial tie against visiting Remo Stars, Deji Ayeni assured that his players have handled themselves professionally since the incident and it won’t have any effect on their mentality.

“We spoken about it since we arrived and they are psyched up. And as professionals, they know it’s one of those things but we hope that doesn’t happen to us again. So, we have shifted our attention to our job and we are approaching Remo Stars game differently,” Ayeni told PUNCH Sports Extra.

In their first five games of the season, Akwa United have managed seven points with two wins, a draw and two defeats. They are five points behind their visitors who have amassed 12 points in as many games as well.
