Following reports that several English Premier League clubs are interested in his service, Nigerian striker, Chuba Akpom, has insisted he will love to remain with Ajax for at least another season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Barely a year after he left England for The Netherlands, Akpom has been linked with a return, with several unnamed clubs said to be interested in his services.
Akpom had an excellent 2022/23 season with Middlesbrough where he scored an impressive 28 league goals from 38 matches and almost guided them back to the Premier League.
He went on to become one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe but eventually joined Ajax for a fee believed to be in the region of €12m.
After a difficult start in Amsterdam, Akpom has shown glimpses of his brilliance, netting 13 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions.
The 28-year-old’s stat is even more impressive considering the fact that he started only eight of those 30 matches.
His impressive form has seen him being linked with a move away from the club and according to Ajax Fanatics, several unnamed Premier League clubs are keen on taking him back to England ahead of next season.
“He is a boy who does not whine too much and is not negative when he is on the bench,” the website wrote.
“This combination of return and attitude makes Akpom valuable to the people of Amsterdam.
“Akpom did very well in England. He is ‘homegrown’ and can provide good statistics. Clubs in the right-hand row of the Premier League in particular are very interested in this.”
However, reacting to the rumours making the mills, Akpom said he remained committed to Ajax and hopes to make more impact next season.
“Honestly, I have no idea,” Akpom told ESPN, as per AF, when asked where his next possible destination is.
“We’ll probably look into that at the end of the season. Right now, we need to focus on getting three points from every game we play.
“Honestly, I don’t know much about what’s happening behind closed doors. I talk to my agent, but I don’t know what the club thinks.
“I made it clear that I wanted to stay here (during the winter window) because I believed I could have a big impact. So, I really wanted to stay.
“Of course, I want to stay. I play for Ajax. I know it hasn’t been a good season for us, but I enjoy it here. Besides, we can only do better next season. I’m definitely happy to be here.”
