Nigeria’s first Olympic gold medallist Chioma Ajunwa in a bid to give a better life to the widows in the season of Christmas through its foundation, Chioma Ajunwa Foundation fetes widows in Lagos with gifts and also appealed for a better living for the widow.

The foundation used the yuletide season as an opportunity to celebrate the widows and empower people who are not economically stable.

Speaking at the occasion at the Nigeria Police College in Ikeja, Lagos, the founder and president of the foundation who won gold at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta disclosed that the foundation will ensure that they give a better life to the widows and their families.

“We are celebrating the widows, putting smiles on their faces, we care and love them and we want to make a difference with the Chioma Anjuwa Foundation, ” the 51-year-old police officer said.

She also urged other corporate bodies and individuals to provide support for the widows and appealed to the international government and Non-Government Agencies to partner with her organisation for wider outreach.

“It’s not everybody that has the mind to go into this initiative, but whichever way they can try to touch lives, they should do so because personally, I believe that touching lives, more especially the widows, the less privileged, orphans are a heavenly investment which you do for eternity sake. I will encourage them to try to impact lives in whichever way they can.”

Ajunwa is a Nigerian former athlete who specialized in the long jump. She achieved fame when she became the first Nigerian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. To date, she remains Nigeria’s only individual Olympic gold medalist.
