Ahead of the African Games qualifiers in Lagos, head coach of Nigeria’s women’s senior volleyball team, Samuel Ajayi, has named 12 players as the team battles to pick up one of the tickets for the event in Ghana later this year, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 2024 African Games qualifiers are scheduled for January 4 to 8 at the National Stadium, Lagos.

The team aims to qualify and win a medal after missing out on podium finishes since 2003. Ajayi has opted to mix experience and youth, with a roster featuring five regular players, five U-21 players and two U-17 players.

Ijeoma Ukpabi has been selected to captain the team, while Jummai Bitrus is the newly selected assistant captain.

Meanwhile, all the participating teams are expected to arrive in Nigeria on Thursday (today), while technical meetings will hold on Friday, before the commencement of the games proper on Saturday.

“Nigeria will be hosting the African Games qualifiers and the teams are prepared because camp opened December 26 and most of the players have been very active,” Dare Kuti, media assistant to the President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation told PUNCH Sports Extra.

“The federation has been working with the technical committee to ensure that all necessities are put in place for the players to give a good account of themselves.”
