Agroterra Blessed Club have emerged tops at the maiden Lagos Athletics Club Series with 4746 points followed by Eaglesight Club with 4574, while Udo-Obong Wolves had 3710 points, Sheku Striders (2664) and No Sweat Club (1770), to complete the Top 5 clubs.

The event was held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex February 19.

The four-leg event is organised by the Lagos State Athletics Association and is aimed at encouraging club participation in tournaments, as well as encouraging athletes to work as a team.

Over 600 athletes across the country from the registered 24 clubs turned up for the first leg, with the top teams sharing the N1m purse made available by the organisers for the first leg of the N10m-prize money tournament.

Technical Director of LSAA, Enefiok Udo-Obong, said he was impressed with the performance of the athletes.

“I can tell you that it was indeed an excellent performance from the athletes and a well-attended event with over 655 participants registered by the 24 clubs that featured in the first leg. It was very competitive as some young athletes gave a good account of themselves.

“The athletes and teams were delighted with the cash reward and we hope more teams will be part of the tournament in the second leg come April,” he said.

Winner of one of the women’s 200m finals, Ada Bright of Osheku Striders, described the event as an opportunity for her to showcase her talents as well as test her strength against some top athletes.

“I think I ran very well and I am hoping to be improving in each leg of the competition. My aim and target were to better my time and which I hope is possible,” she said.
