Flying Eagles left-back, Solomon Agbalaka, has shared what him and the rest of the squad hope to accomplish in the ongoing Under-20 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Ladan Bosso’s team are vying for an eighth African title, as well as a ticket to the 2023 U-20 World Cup in Indonesia in May.
Even as they hope to follow their WAFU B championship with the continental prize, the set defender has indicated that the team’s ultimate goal is to qualify for the World Cup.
Agbalaka’s outstanding effort and his lone goal won the game against Egypt for Bosso’s team. At the same time, Samson Lawal and Ibrahim Muhammad scored two goals to give the seven-time champions their second victory in the competition against Mozambique on Saturday.
His performance in the two games has earned him back-to-back man of the match awards.
“I’m happy to be named the Man-of-The-Match for the second time running. It was a good performance, and we needed to win and qualify for the quarterfinals of the tournament,” the Broad City FC player told CAFonline.
“Our objective is to book a place in the semifinals which will qualify us to the FIFA U-20 World Cup. We played well and scored good goals today, so we will keep improving in the matches to come.”
The Flying Eagles finished second in Group A behind Senegal with six points.
Agbalaka and his teammates would hope to seal the World Cup ticket in the next round, as they go into their quarterfinal match on Thursday.
