According to a report on Worldsoccertalk, the United States is planning to convince Folarin Balogun, a Nigeria-eligible Arsenal striker who is currently on loan at Ligue 1 side Reims, to play for their Men’s National Team.
The 21-year-old forward leads the Ligue 1 top scores chart with 14 goals in 20 appearances and is ahead of France World Cup winner Kylian Mbappé, Neymar, Lionel Messi and Alexandre Lacazette in the French topflight league.
Worldsoccertalk says the US Soccer and the USMNT are working to make Balogun switch allegiance as they see the striker as a key part of their national team.
Balogun, who is born to Nigerian parents, can also play for the US, where he was born, and England, where he was raised.
The striker’s sensational form has seen him score 54 per cent of their league goals; 14 out of their 26 league goals, a higher share than any player for a team in Europe’s top five leagues.
Across Europe’s top five leagues, only Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen have scored more times than Balogun this season.
