NSSF athletics trials gets new date, venue

The Nigeria School Sports Federation has rescheduled the second World School Athletics trials to hold between January 17 and 20 at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.

The event was initially scheduled to hold between January 10 and January 13 at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.

President of the federation, Olabisi Joseph, who confirmed the change in date and venue to The PUNCH, said it was due to logistic reasons.

“The venue has been changed. It is now going to hold in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The arrival is January 17th and the World School Athletics trials hold January 18 and 19, while departure is January 20th,” she noted.

According to the initial circular sent to different states, which was obtained by our correspondent, the talents discovered at the event will represent Nigeria at the International School Sport Federation U-18 World School Athletics Championships in Turkey from June 19 to 25, as well as the ISF U-15 World School Sport Games, which holds in Brazil from August 19 to 27.

After 15 years absence, Nigeria appeared at the 19th ISF Gymnasiade in France, where Ronke Akanbi, an SS1 pupil from Ilaro, Ogun State won gold in the girls 3000m race.

The 18-year-old schoolgirl’s record run broke the 33-year-old national record of 9:41.28 in the event, which was set by Itsemhike Anwalimhobor March 22, 1989 in Benin City.
