Football followers within and outside Nigeria have poured encomiums on Racing Louisville striker Uchenna Kanu following a fine outing at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The powerful striker played all Falcons four games at the 32-team tournament but the highlight of her displays was scoring the equaliser against co-hosts Australia in Group B, as the Falcons cruised to a remarkable 3-2 win, which helped them secure a spot in the round of 16.

On Monday, Kanu posted her grass-to-grace story on her Instagram handle, which sparked reactions about her World Cup performance.

“Growing up my opportunities were limited because of the environment I was born into. Societal norms and other cultural factors made it almost impossible to not give up on my dreams. Many believed that a girl should not kick a football,” Kanu posted.

“LONG STORY SHORT I didn’t give up regardless of the heat and pressure from people around me. I kept believing in myself and my talent, praying that one day I would not only charge the narratives but rewrite my story.

“Today I’m proud of myself and all my accomplishments. Most importantly, grateful that humbled to be an inspiration and role models to all the young girls in my hometown who look up to me in pursuit of my dreams.”

In reaction, one of her followers Ikeagwuanaba compared the 26-year-old to Ivorian legend Didier Drogba.

“Which club you day make I day followup on your games, our Female Drogba,” he posted.

An impressed omole_first_son stated that he was dazzled by Kanu’s performance against England, despite the Nigerians exiting on penalties against the country’s former colonial masters.
