Nigerian football fans threw their weight behind the Super Falcons ahead of the former African champions Women’s World Cup last 16 clash against England early on Monday morning (today).
It’s the fourth time both sides will meet at senior women’s football, with the Nigerians having an upper hand with two wins — 1-0 in 2002 and 3-0 in 2004 in friendlies — while the English triumphed once — a 3-2 victory at the 1995 edition of the World Cup in Sweden.
So, it means the record African champions will be gunning for a revenge, almost three decades they lost to England at the World Cup and fans back home are rooting for them to triumph in Brisbane.
Pela Ilekhuoba, a fan, stated on Facebook, “Nigeria you can defeat England. Make them know you’re tough.”
Pros Per II wrote, “England will pay for what Japan and Netherlands did to our African sisters. They will explain to us why they choose football over wrestling.”
Bello Abdul Hakeem added, “We are ready to make history. We are ready to show the Lionesses that we are Falcons and we fly higher.”
Husayn TJ said, “England will explain to Nigeria why they choose football over gossip.”
On his part, Abdullah Suleman is optimistic the Falcons will overcome England and march on to win the World Cup.
He said, “Super Falcons of Nigeria will win the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Call it exaggeration if you like, but it’s inevitable, it’s coming home.”
